Diving
in the Galapagos Islands is a unique adventure. The diving
conditions are ruled by the convergence of six oceanic currents
that allows for a large diversity in marine species, many of which
are endemic. The specialized magazine Rodale's Scuba Diving has
classified Galapagos as the best destination in the world for this
activity. Scuba diving charters have to be approved by the
Ecuadorian National Park Service. Diving is available at all
levels with certified dive masters (many guides speak English, but
you should check). Scuba diving in the Galapagos is an amazing
experience. It is extremely popular due to the amazing wildlife
that you find on the island and in the water. Some of the marine
animals that you may encounter here are whale sharks, hammerhead
sharks, marine iguanas, seals, crabs, octopi, whales, sea turtles,
and dolphins. There are many dive sites and dive boat operators,
so it is fairly easy to go where you want, when you want. Dive
conditions vary with the season
Snorkeling: Snorkeling in the Galapagos islands is an
amazing adventure activity. The snorkeling possibilities in the
Galapagos waters are endless. Playfull Sea Lions, Penguins, marine
iguanas, colorful fish, marine turtles, rays, and even sharks are
just part of the underwater life you will see while snorkeling.
You can spend hours in the water enjoying the show! Snorkeling
allows visitors to take a glimpse at this unique environment and
learn about life under the sea. Snorkeling is frequently the
favorite part of a visit to the Galapagos.
Surfing: Surfing in the Galapagos islands is a
rather old activity practiced by locals and visitors. Surfing the
Galapagos Islands is something you will remember for the rest of
your life. You regularly surf with dolphins, sea lions, turtles
and iguanas and it seems they love the surf in Galapagos as much
as we do because you see them surfing along side of you all the
time. The best season for Surfing the Galapagos Islands is from
December through May, since this is the time period that the
Galapagos Islands receives both north and south swells. However,
there is good surf all year and the winds are also usually
offshore.
kayaking: With a sea kayak you can have
much more fun on the areas that have been permitted its use. Only
this way you'll be able to travel through the bends and inland
waterways that usually hide surprises that otherwise will go
unnoticed. Sea kayaking in Galapagos Paddle by playful sea
lions, glide above white-tipped sharks, watch Blue-footed boobies
plummet into the sea.
Hiking: Few to no places are open to
free hiking in the Galapagos, though you can find a few adventure
trails on San Cristobol and Santa Cruz. We recommend, though, for
all hikes, to go with a Galapagos adventure guide. The Galapagos
guides can point out the fascinating details of the islands,
turning a beautiful activity hike into an encylopedic experience. |
