Hosteria La Cienega

La Cienega, the oldest and most splendid colonial hacienda in Ecuador has belonged to the descendents of Marques of Maenza since the seventeenth century. Situated on the outskirts of Volcano Cotopaxi and its National Park, it’s just an hour and a half’s journey from Quito, capital of the Middle of the World.

Surrounded by the Andes most magnificent snow-capped peaks, the hacienda, which was converted into a beautiful Ecuadorian mountainside lodge with two-metre thick walls carved from volcanic rock, finally opened its doors to the public in 1982, offering charm, history and tradition.

Today, tastefully converted into a first-class hotel, La Cienega offers the visitor the unique experience of staying within its two-meter thick volcanic stone walls which stand as silent witnesses to the history of a people and the poetry of an era. Surrounded by the breath-taking natural beauty of the landscape and rich folklore of Ecuador's indigenous people. La Cienega is an unforgettable souvenir of your visit to the Andes.

There are 32 rooms which are a mixture of double rooms, junior suites, and luxury suites. All have private bathrooms, hot water, telephones and heaters. The hacienda’s restaurant serves international cuisine. Other facilities include a chapel – mainly used for weddings, two seminar rooms, a bar, sports facilities and gardens. Among the activities available at La Ciénaga are: sport fishing, hikes, horseback riding.

The rooms are colonial and 19th century furnishings and has many other reminders of its past, including a private chapel.
