It is one of the oldest churches in South America, dating from the year 1535, after the Spanish foundation. It is also the highest-ranking Catholic temple, because it was elevated to the Primada Cathedral of Ecuador in 1995.
Located in the Historic Center of Quito, it occupies the entire southern flank of the Plaza de la Independencia. Its construction is made of stone and it has been classified in a neoclassical style, although its architecture presents 4 four different styles such as: Neo-Gothic, Mudejar, Neoclassical and Baroque.
The Metropolitan Cathedral is a historical relic of the city of Quito, inside it houses a collection of works of art from the Quito School, for it was declared by Unesco, Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1978.
The Cathedral is the cradle of immortal legends and Baroque architectural works of art, which can be seen on the walls and altars of the church, which cautiously keep the memory of great national plastic exponents such as Miguel de Santiago and Manuel Chili Caspicara.
