Santo Domingo Church

Located in the Historic Center of Quito, the Santo Domingo church is in charge of the Dominican religious order, next to the convent, museum and plaza that bear the same name.

Its construction began in 1540, the Church of Santo Domingo was subjected to different internal reconstructions due to the ideas of the Italian Dominicans. The total work was completed in the first half of the 17th century.

The church was adorned with well-carved coffered ceilings, pictures, and canvas. The temple is covered in cedar with gold leaf. Along with the main altarpiece, the ten side chapels complete the interior of Santo Domingo, which further enriches the internal body of the church with beautiful woodwork and gold leaf.

The Chapel of the Virgen del Rosario is the best known in the Church of Santo Domingo, which has relics of saints inside. It was built on three different levels, the first for peninsular Spaniards and Spaniards born in America, the second for black and mestizo edges, and the third for indigenous people. Each group had its corresponding space in a kind of smaller chapels.
