The
History of the Middle of the World
French scientists
from the
Paris Academy of Science, hoping to take
advantage of Ecuador's geological position on the equator, sent two
expeditions to Ecuador- in the 17th and 18th century- in order to measure
the exact circumference of the earth. The second mission was led by
General
Charles Perrier.
In 1936,
the French-American Committee sponsored the idea of the Ecuadorian
geographer Dr. Luis Tufio and raised a monument commemorating 200 years of
the arrival of the First Mission. A monument 10 meters high was erected in
San Antonio de Pichincha.
