Carmen Alto monastery
The old or upper Carmen, also known as the Carmen of
St. Joseph, was established in 1653 in the house that had belonged to
Santa Mariana de Jesus, fulfilling the prophecy made by the Virgin of
Quito. The Jesuit brother Marcos Guerra drew up the plans and was
responsible for the construction of the church and the monastery. The
main facade of the church looks out over the atrium. |
